Ruby on Rails Developer - London - 3 months


£450 - £500 a day

I am currently recruiting on behalf of Cabinet Office. They require a Ruby on Rails Developer for a 3 month contract to start ASAP

The role will be based in London office and has been deemed outside of IR35. The pay will be a maximum of £450 - £500 based on LTD/Umbrella pay

GDS leads digital transformation in government, collaborating with teams from other departments to help them build better public services. Alongside those departmental teams, they are transforming government together.

Data is a critical resource for enabling more efficient, effective government and public services that respond to citizens needs.

Data acts as the foundation upon which everything else rests. We plan to radically improve the availability, quality and use of government data and make it easier to put that data to good use. Government data is often held and used solely within the organisation that collected it and legacy systems make it hard to share information.

There is too much duplication, overlap and contradiction in the datasets government holds. We need to get better at sharing data across organisational boundaries in ways that citizens are comfortable with. Registers are important components of this modern data infrastructure. Registers are lists of information; each register is the most reliable list of its kind. Registers are owned and managed by custodians based in government organisations. Key to their success is their adoption by service teams both inside and outside government.

The Registers team requires an experienced Ruby on Rails developer to develop the Register Management Tool. The tool is a secure and accessible application that enables custodians and their teams to be responsible for updating their register(s).

The candidate must ensure high quality code is delivered in line with project goals, delivery cycles and the needs of users. The candidate will use agile methods, working openly, collaboratively and as part of the multidisciplinary Registers team ensuring that they own the quality and timely delivery of the project, sharing their knowledge and enabling other team members to continuously support and develop the tool.

Essential skills:
2+ years Ruby on Rails 5 experience

Good knowledge of Ruby on Rails 5 best practice
2+ years relational database experience - PostgresSQL preferred
2+ years experience building accessible and secure front-end services
Must have Agile working/devops experience
Cloud-based deployment experience is highly preferable
Must have ability to work independently and move in a fast-paced environment
Must have excellent communication skills
Must have experience in passing on knowledge in a structured way
Must have experience in acting as the technical expert in a team
Must have ability to work using own initiative to deadlines
Experience using git version control
Experience using testing to validate solutions
Experience of technologies used for web applications and the use of REST APIs

Desirable skills:

Previous experience working in the public sector on government services is desirable
Previous experience working in a multi-disciplinary team with focus on user needs is highly desirable
