Java Developer / Southend-on-Sea / 3 Months Contract / 400 to 550 GBP (Per Day)

Customs & International Trade (C&IT), within the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) organisation, is responsible for design changes to HMRC's IT systems to ensure that they match HMRC's needs and objectives in the most cost-effective way and in accordance with agreed strategic design principles. C&IT is also the in-house software developer with responsibility for:

Development projects (design, build and test);
Enhancements to existing applications;
Application support (fixing faults, service improvements, tech refresh);
Managing Business Developed Applications (across all lines of business)

HMRC currently has a requirement for two JAVA Developers to work within our in house IT organisation on a complex N-TIER multi technology application. They will work to a Project Manager on an Agile project and will be required to liaise with multiple stakeholders located in Southend, London and Cardiff.

Key Tasks and Deliverables

As a developer you will work within a multi-disciplinary team of developers, designers, analysts focussed on one or more products or projects.

Day-to-day you will be responsible for working with that team to design, create and improve new and existing products, platforms and transactions across government.

The main responsibilities of the post are:

Building web applications to serve a variety of citizens' needs.
Implementing APIs for internal and external use.
Building up a useful, robust Test Driven Development test suite to support a Continuous Deployment environment - while supporting QAs with automated testing and regression suites.
Being involved in the wider web development community, identifying good practices we can adopt and sharing experiences.
Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team, both developers and non-developers.
Taking part in 3rd-line support of applications and platforms, including occasional support outside of office hours.
Mentoring other Java developers and providing knowledge transfer of experience and tools.

Key Knowledge and Skills (Experience)


Experienced Java enterprise developer (worked on various Java enterprise applications)
Experience in building server-side web applications and detailed understanding and experience of front-end web development (HTML/CSS/JS)
Experience and understanding of relational databases (mariaDB, mysql, oracle)
Good working knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL
Experience in writing stored procedures for MySQL
Good working knowledge of JBoss application server
Experience in using Spring and Spring MVC.
Working knowledge of LDAP and JAAS.
Experience in using various XML APIs in particular stAX API and JAXB.
Experience in using the Java Persistence API.
Experience and detail understanding of EclipseLink and Hibernate
Working knowledge of Unix-like operating systems such as Linux and/or Mac OS X
Working knowledge of unit tests tools and best practices for automation - e.g. Mockito, Junit
Experience in Test driven development
Working knowledge of Continuous Integration environments
Experience using the Git repository and Jenkins
Full understanding and practical experience of agile development
Ability to learn new and old technologies rapidly, and embrace change
An ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience
Experience working on technical projects within a team
Ability to quickly research and learn new and old programming tools and techniques
Experience working with trainees and providing knowledge transfers

In addition the following knowledge and skills are desirable and may be used for additional value:

Strong linux / unix skills
Understanding of web security
Knowledge of relational and non-relational database systems
Good working knowledge of Weblogic application server
System administration and configuration management skills
Experience presenting work at user groups and conferences
Experience of building and scaling high-traffic websites
Experience in using Struts 2
Understanding of the use of Responsive Web Design
Experience building webservice (preferably Jax RPC)
Experience of working with JavaScript libraries to produce data visualizations
Experience of designing and maintaining public HTTP APIs
Experience of handling large data sets and scaling their handling and storage
Experience in using various PDF generators API or tools, preferably iText.
Experience in assisting QAs to create automated test suites
